Review: Stila One Step Illuminate

I think I’ll lose all credibility as a beauty writer if I recommend this in one more Get-the-look story, so I’ll just do a short-and-sweet review and then retire it to my personal makeup bag to enjoy till the end of its days.

If you like having a glow but are afraid of all-out shine, this one will be great for you. And if you think ‘triple swirled helix serum’ is just fancy talk for a primer, listen up.

First up, it contains three illuminating/highlighting bronzing shades: a pale pink to warm the skin, champagne to highlight, and Kitten, Stila’s cult shade, to brighten and illuminate. This is of course suspended in a fair amount of silicone to even out the skin surface, mattify sligthly (but don’t count on this one if you’re super oily) and make makeup application a breeze. It gives a a luminous, lit-from-within sheen – someone actually complimented me by saying my makeup application is ‘perfect’ the first time I used this.

Aside from the immediate benefits, I snooped through the ingredient list and found Retinyl Palmitate (in the top 1/3 of the ingredient list, which is impressive for a makeup product), as well as a bunch of vitamins and extracts with good anti-oxidant properties – so I’m no longer worried that my ‘primer’ is just going to sit there and clog up my skin, like I was before.

Stila products are available from selected Truworths and Woolworths stores, and One Step Illuminate will set you back R330. Also available in One Step Correct (which I’m very keen to try) and One Step Bronze.
