DIY Iced Tea Recipe

I’m so flipping excited to finally have an iced tea recipe that works.

Yes, I’m aware that I can just join Nerds Anonymous and get it over with. But I really like iced tea, and the store versions are packed with either sugar or artificial sweeteners; and the recipes I’ve tried so far have mostly just tasted like cold tea or they’re made up of 50% fruit juice.

Back in Feb when I visited my mom, she shared this one with me. It’s delicious, super refreshing and just about sugar free. I figured a nice little heatwave is the ideal time to share it with you.

sugar free iced tea recip

Ingredients

2 litres boiling water

2 rooibos tea bags

2 green tea bags

2 flavoured tea bags

60ml stevia/xilytol granules (you can use liquid too, but the quantity would be much less)

1 tablespoon raw honey

1 cinnamon stick

2 slices of ginger

½ tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp citric acid

Method

  1. Chuck everything except the citric acid together and let it brew for 15 min.
  2. Remove the tea bags & all other solids.
  3. Add the citric acid and refrigerate.

Serve with mint leaves, ice and fruit slices, and remember to smugly mention to everyone that it’s home made and free from refined sugar.

This is our favourite basic iced tea recipe, you can of course customise pretty much everything about it to your taste.

This sounds amazing, definitely going to try it! I will however use normal sugar as I don’t mind a bit of the refined stuff. 😉 Just for interest sake: what does the citric acid do?

Go for it in that case! Citric acid adds a bit of a zesty/tangy taste without actually making it sour. It’s what sherbet is made of if that helps?

I’ve also been searching for the perfect recipe since forever, very excited to try this. Is the 1/2 tsp vanilla as in vanilla essence in a botteltjie?

Ja, liquid would be easiest in this case – but whatever version you have should work x

I want to try this but without the green tea as the caffeine would keep my kids buzzing. Anyone omitted the green tea? Thanks for sharing, cant wait to try in (sans green tea).

You can definitely switch green tea for a different one. Have you tried it yet?
