DIY Body Scrub Recipe

Have you ever had skin so dry that it became itchy and then had zero access to body scrub? Me neither until last week. I may have mentioned that my parents (who I’m currently visiting) live in a really small town and even though their supermarket is gigantic, there wasn’t one non-soap based body scrub to be found so I decided to make my own.

Here’s the body scrub recipe that I came up with using only ingredients from the grocery cupboard:

  • 1.5 cups sugar (I used raw brown sugar because that’s what we had, but it doesn’t really matter)
  • half a cup table salt
  • half a cup grapeseed oil (olive oil or any other vegetable oil will work too)
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 100 drops (5ml) essential oils

The instructions that go along with this body scrub recipe aren’t complicated at all, as you can imagine – just mix it all together. My mom requested cinnamon and orange flavoured scrub, so those are the two essential oils I used (I use SOiL oils). When using essential oils in bath or body products, always keep the concentration below 3% (a total of 3ml essential oils per 100ml mixed product) to prevent skin irritation, and don’t mistake potpourri or fragrance oils for essential oils as the former two are no good for your skin.

This batch yielded about 400ml body scrub, and you can tweak the vegetable oil content to your preference – I like mine to have a slight oily layer on top when it settles. I’m pretty impressed with the result and I might just start making these as gifts now!

PS – somewhere along the line my mom basically started living a Pinterest housewife life so I’ve been having a ball making cleaning products and other things with her – expect some more recipes and tutorials to come in the next few weeks. I love making my own scrubs. I haven’t used cinnamon EO in one yet because just 3 drops in an entire bath of water one day gave me such a severe rash. I love cinnamon and read that it is not really supposed to come into contact with skin directly. I had imagined that diluted in a bath would be fine but it seems not to agree with me. I can only imagine how divine this scrub of yours must smell. I am a sucker for Sweet Orange essential oil.

Hi Celeste! I generally find bathing in essential oils tricky with my skin too – even commonly used skin oils like tea tree burn my skin – I reckon it’s because they don’t dissolve in the water so the undiluted oil tends to get in contact with your skin on the surface of the water (if that makes sense to you). Didn’t have any issues with the oil in the scrub as its only on the skin for a minute or two and then gets rinsed off. But if you’re worried rather stick to the milder and more soothing oils.
