Last week the team from Red Square asked me if I’d like to work with them on a campaign to share some Beauty Winter Wonders.
Since I’m pretty much always up for a challenge I agreed to pick three products from their online shop that I see as winter wonders. But as I was browsing I realised that I didn’t want to do this the way I usually approach ‘winter’ features. Yes, you should use an additional hydrating serum and probably a richer moisturiser. Yes, you should incorporate a body oil. Yes, lip balm is essential. But I’m pretty sure I’ve waffled on about those things enough times now.
And winter isn’t just something to ‘get through’. I’m biased because I do truly like winter, but I’m absolutely baffled when I hear how much people miss out on purely because the temperate drops. I refuse to wilt away at home for four months just because it happens to be cold. While I do appreciate a cup of tea, a fluffy blanket and a good book; I’m all about seizing the day – even if it’s a chilly one.
Which brings me to my Beauty Winter Wonder picks. In winter I dress with plenty of layers, and I also seem to dress edgier – there’s more textures (leather/pleather jackets, chunky scarves, coarser denim) and things like boots with buckles and block heels add to that vibe as well. My hair is messier, I’m more daring with perfume choices – there’s basically no stopping me.
Excited about the last month of winter yet? Not quite? I’ll keep going then. With the above I feel that I can also play around with my makeup more. If I’m lazy I’ll keep my complexion fresh with Chanel CC Cream instead of foundation, slap on mascara and statement lipstick and add glowy highlighting powder as a final touch. Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights in Baked Starburst (find it here) is great for just that – it’s the ultimate multi-tasker. There’s a little colour, a little bronzing and loads of warmth and highlighting.
I do, however, prefer to accentuate my eyes rather than my lips on most days. I love that Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in the shade Velvet Plum (find it here) can simultaneously brighten and add depth to my pale grey/green eyes. It’s one of those shadows that blends so well you can do an entire look with one shade, and I love that it’s a slight variation on my staple neutrals without being too colourful.
My final touch is always perfume. I have an extensive collection and I wear fragrance daily, and in winter I play around with different scents a lot more. On cold days (and especially on cold nights) I enjoy perfumes that smell a little more unexpected and a little more daring, which is where Tom Ford Black Orchid (it’s over here) deserves a special mention.
I didn’t even bother taking a sniff to try out Black Orchid for so many years, because it seemed so overhyped in the beauty world. It’s a scent to experience though – as with the majority of Tom Ford scents it’s unisex, although I’m not sure I’d enjoy it on a man. The composition is pretty complicated so I’m not going to list the notes, but believe me when I say it’s a spicy, slightly floral bottle of magic.
Hopefully I’ve given you some motivation to not be miserable, boring and bland for four months every year. If you need a further kick start to embrace the last month or so, go have a browse on the Red Square site and decide which Beauty Winter Wonders are on your shopping list – there’s a R1000 Red Square gift card up for grabs. Just leave a comment on this post telling me what your top pick would be!
Competition is open to South African residents only and ends at midnight on Wednesday, 19 August 2015. Terms and conditions apply. Aside from leaving a comment, you’re welcome to complete the additional entry options in the Rafflecopter widget below, but it’s not mandatory at all.
While you’re browsing, keep an eye out for the newly listed Essence, Catrice, Benefit and Bobbi Brown products, which brings their offering up to an impressive 92 brands. A little birdie told me there are also some more new brands that will be listed before the end of the year, but I don’t have any inside intel on those just yet. If you’re more of an in-store browser, apparently the Red Square in Gateway is top notch and the Chanel Beauté counter in Red Square Rosebank Mall is to die for. I look forward to seeing what your Beauty Winter Wonder picks are!
